Ability Montana's Programs That Promote Independence

Posted on: Jul 17, 2024

At Ability Montana, we’re all about community and empowerment. Building connections is a big part of living independently with a disability, and Ability Montana programs offer support to strengthen that community.

Outdoor Recreation

Ability Montana’s partnership with Camp BullWheel helps get more people outside and on the river with a range of adaptive recreation equipment. Camp BullWheel is the only place in the world where someone with a high spinal cord injury can cast a rod and line from a boat independently. With professional guides and the use of Camp BullWheel’s gear, it’s possible for more people than ever to get out on the water for fishing and other water-based recreation.

In the winter, you can still enjoy time outdoors through offerings like ice skating in Bozeman and Helena, with an adaptive sit skate available. It’s an empowering feeling to try something new or practice an activity you love. You can find information about all the upcoming outdoor recreation opportunities on the Ability Montana events calendar.

Peer Mentoring

Sometimes, you just need to talk to someone who gets it. Peer Mentoring through Ability Montana matches individuals with similar disabilities, helping them find empowerment through support and encouragement. Peer Mentor support can assist with adapting to life with a disability or transitioning through different life stages. If you’re looking for a Peer Mentor, finding one is as simple as giving your local office a call.

Groups and Meetings

Ability Montana hosts many support groups that meet regularly throughout the year in its Bozeman, Butte, and Helena locations.

Men’s Group and Women’s Group are held in both Butte and Helena. Ability Montana also hosts a game night in Helena at the Lewis and Clark Library on the fourth Thursday of every month. The Butte location offers an MS support group, Dungeons and Dragons, a craft group, and a wellness group – dedicated to promoting holistic health through regular exercise, lifestyle empowerment, and nutritional guidance – among others. In Bozeman, you can drop in for open hours every Tuesday from 10am to 12pm.

Events

Ability Montana hosts fundraising events like the Give Big Gallatin Valley kick-off BBQ and Greater Helena Gives hosted at Blackfoot River Brewing Co. Let’s Talk! Disability in Butte and Helena gives a forum for people with disabilities to share their experiences. This monologue production features individuals with disabilities sharing their personal stories.

Other special events include the SPARCs Prom, with snacks, music, refreshments, and crowning the prom king and queen. While these events have already passed this year, there’s always more coming up soon.

The groups are peer facilitated, sometimes with a staff member there too. All are welcome, and you can feel free to drop in or reach out ahead of time to RSVP. You can see everything that’s coming up on our online calendar.

Tools and Training

Practical tips and new skills can make a world of difference when living with a disability. Get in touch with one of our Independent Living specialists about our training courses on cooking, budgeting, and more. We’re here to help you develop the skills you need to live independently.
